Thomas O. Chisholm, born in 1866, certainly had his share of disappointments in life. He aspired to be a preacher but had to resign after one year of ministry due to poor health. He wrote poetry but various Christian magazines continually rejected his work. When one of his pieces were occasionally accepted, he received little or no money for it. He earned a meager living selling life insurance.
At age 75 Thomas Chisholm wrote: “My income has not been large at any time in my life. My health has been poor since I was a young man. But I must not fail to record the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God. He gave me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.”
It was this gratitude for God’s faithfulness that led Thomas O. Chisholm in 1923 to pen the words of the great hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness!”
You may not be as eloquent as Thomas O. Chisholm was to pen the words of a wonderful song like “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” but you can still express the gratitude of your heart to God. How have you seen God’s faithfulness in your life? Have you thanked Him recently for His faithfulness?
